Question: "How should a Christian view homeopathic medicine?"
Answer: A good deal of what is advertised as "homeopathic" is merely the application of natural products and methods to treat disease, which may not be given the seal of approval by the mainstream medical field. This has been going on for centuries. Just because something is naturalistic or out of mainstream thought does not insure that it is ineffective and or harmful. The definition of homeopathy is a method of treating disease by drugs given in minute doses, which would produce in a healthy person symptoms similar to those of the disease being treated. Homeotherapy is therapy by means of an agent that is similar, but not identical to the causative agent of the disease. Homeopathic medicine is the practice of using these methodologies to treat diseases. Given this definition, live culture immunization is a form of homeopathy in which a small amount of a disease is given to a healthy person in the hope that the body injected will develop antibodies to combat the particular disease. Therefore, modern medicine is itself filled with homeopathic practices.
A Christian, that is, a born-again believer, should view medicine as a gift from God. There is no knowledge today that is "new." Man is discovering many of what are called new breakthroughs in the treatment of the diseases that plague humanity, but these substances were already in existence and the knowledge that God has gifted man with has only begun to scratch the surface of what is available. We are always hearing of a common substance that is effective for treatment that it was not previously known for. As believers, our responsibility is not to follow medical fads but to investigate the validity of claims based not on emotional terms but upon research bolstered by using God's viewpoint rather than humanistic values.
A wise believer should be wary of something that sounds "too good to be true," but that caution applies to every aspect of our lives. As believers, we are not our own; we are bought with a price (1 Corinthians 7:23) and we are to be good stewards (1 Corinthians 4:2), and that stewardship extends to our bodies and our health. We should be wise in how we treat ourselves and in the ways and from whom we seek medical treatment. Therefore, homeopathy can be one of the choices that a believer may make in order to seek treatment for the diseases that sin has brought into this world.
